Nightmare: Fairy Tales, this year’s eldritch incarnation of Haunted House NYC’s sinister walkthrough, nabbed a recommendation from the New York Times, has curdled the ink of a slew of other publications, and startled a response from online weekly GALO Magazine. Touted as the production’s most stylistic house to date, Fairy Tales leads blindfolded groups of 12–15 into a haunted forest where a series of quaint cabins houses gruesome versions of storybook characters such as Snow White and Rapunzel. Once guests are corralled in the sylvan nightmare, staffers remove their blindfolds to reveal the creatures torturing one another in grisly reenactments of the original versions of Brothers Grimm tales, initially designed to frighten naughty children with threats of sinister punishments and green beans for dessert. After screaming muscles have been adequately stretched to prevent painful cramping, visitors emerge from the woods to attend The Experiment, an interactive session that tests audiences’ tolerance for five kinds of fear. What those results may be is a mystery, since no one who has entered Nightmare: Fairy Tales has ever come out again … until about 25–35 minutes later.

Since Nightmare: Fairy Tales is designed to tap into an otherwise fearless adult’s sheer terror, it is too terrifying for children younger than 16 who are not accompanied by an adult and is off-limits to anyone younger than 10. While Haunted House NYC sometimes offers a discounted price, this Groupon still represents the best deal available.
